Garbage Night Update! 垃圾夜(續)

We did another garbage run last night and learned something from the tall, friendly guy in No. 9 across the street.

  1. We don't have to wait until 9:45 PM to toss our trash! If we're willing to walk another block or so down the street to the OK Mart, we can do the dirty deed at 7:45 PM! Hurray! That means we don't have to wait to take Shower Number 2 (or 3 or 4) of the day before we go to bed.
  2. There IS a difference between the blue and red bins!! It's got nothing to do with gender, though. The blue bin on the left is for ALL compost from the kitchen. The red bin on the right is for feeding the pigs! Trouble is, they're pretty picky about what goes into the pig feeder bin, so no one puts anything in there anymore. Everyone dumps their compost into the blue bin on the left. One lady had approximately 4 metric tons of compost in her bag, and the bin was pretty much topped off by the time we got there. Fortunately, we could pile our peanut shells and chestnut shells, pomelo rinds and questionable persimmons on top without overflowing it.
  3. One does not need a stainless steel pail to collect compost! In fact, almost everyone uses plastic bags for this. Mark was wondering: if you have to use the Official Garbage Bag Without Which No Garbage Will Be Accepted, what do you do with the yucky plastic bag after you dump your compost? Turns out that this is a Well Known Exception to the Official Garbage Bag Rules. You just chuck the plastic bag in with the rest of the Official Garbage Bags. No one bats an eyelash.
So now we know.

By the way, no local residents were harmed last night during garbage disposal. All those ambulances standing by were unnecessary.
